Technology as Religion?

26 July, 09:48 PM

This article in the NYT includes the following quote:

“Something new has taken place in the past five to eight years,” Dr. Horvitz said. “Technologists are replacing religion, and their ideas are resonating in some ways with the same idea of the Rapture.”

This article repeats frequent sentiments of sci-fi dystopias, such as the Matrix or the Time Machine. The Tower of Babel likewise describes our obsession to make a name for ourselves and how it divides us and exacerbates our separation from God. We prefer doing things our own way. The good news of the Bible is that God initiates his plan of reconciliation that our schemes can never live up to.

Where have we approached technology in ways we ought to have reached out to God? What problems are we hoping it solves? When it doesn’t, do we just reboot to a new technology, or can we step out of the rat-race of upgrades to put our hope in Christ?
